Plus your Blogpost the KISS way (#3) - Blogger & Google+ | CutieCoding

Estimated Reading Time:
Welcome to part trois (that's three) or moodu (that's three too) or ʻekolu (that's three 2?)!

This time round, we are talking about how to connect your Blogger blog to your Google+ account so that info about your post gets autoposted to Google Plus!

Remember that really bad flowchart on how to connect your social media accounts without using third party apps? Well, here it is again.
So far, we've covered how to maximize your 'Feedburner' and 'Twitter' accounts. Bloop bloop

Yeah, I know. I didn't really improve on the flowchart, did I?

Note: These instructions are meant for the Blogger platform. However, some general instructions related to Google Plus accounts are, of course, generally applicable.

How does connecting your Blogger blog to Google+ help?

One of the biggest advantages, probably the only one, of connecting your Blogger blog to Google Plus is that it can automatically post a link, a picture, and a short description on that social media site immediately after you publish your article. A side benefit of this is that the Google+ post becomes your first comment on the blog post as well.

One of the biggest disadvantages, among others, of connecting your Blogger blog to Google Plus is that people need to be logged into their Google accounts (or their gmail even) in order to comment on your blog post. Which means that they use their legit names and accounts and anonymous commenting is out. Now, depending on your target audience and how open you want the commenting channel to be, you can decide whether or not you want to connect to Google+.

Even if you don't connect your Blogger blog to Google+, it makes sense to post on the social media site because it does have a unique mix of content-seekers and you might just get lucky. There are also a host of underrated really cool features that Google+ has for content creators that can actually beat all the Facebooks and Twitters in the world but for some reason, is ignored. Like, adding text on your image, flipping through all the images in your article to pick the one you want to display (pinterest-style), editing your post anytime you want, hashtag-friendly searching, and so many more.

If you're not connecting your Blogger blog to Google Plus, I recommend manually copying the link, not your blog post URL, and posting to Google+. If you're wondering 'where did the link come from?', go check out part 2 first.

So why the link and not the blog post URL? Short answer: tracking. Though you have Analytics set up and all that, there's still the ego booster and the benefit of seeing the number of times people have clicked to read your article in real time. Yeah, real time.

Okay. Now, let's jump in to connecting your Google+ account to your Blogger blog.

  • Have your Google+ account set up. I am not talking about that as stated in part 1.
  • Consider having a Google+ page if you are planning to post under a created name or a business name.
  • Understand that switching to your Google+ profile means that it will affect all the blogs under that email address. So, when users click on the author profile link on any of your blogs under that account, they will be taken to your Google Plus profile page.
  • If you have multiple blogs and don't want to use the Google+ profile for all of them, you can always just create a Google+ page that you can connect that blog to.

The TL;DR version
  1. Log in to
  2. Click on the blog you want to edit.
  3. Go to ‘Settings’ and  then navigate to 'Posts, comments and sharing'.

  4. Here, scroll down to the Google+ comments section and click on 'Switch here' where it asks you to move to your Google+ profile.
  5. You are then taken to Blogger's user settings page (you can directly click here if you are logged in)

  6. Select 'Google+' in User Profile and hit 'Save'.
  7. You will then be asked to confirm which profile you want to pick and make sure you understand how it will impact your blog. Read through and understand it. However, you can always switch back later if you want. Check the box and click on 'SWITCH NOW'
  8. Now, jump back into the 'Posts, comments and sharing' page under Settings.
  9. If you created a Google+ page that you want to use instead for that blog

  10. Here, you should be able to now change the two new settings. Mark 'Yes' for 'Auto-share new posts to your Google+ profile'.
  11. Click on 'Save settings' on the top-right corner of the page.
  12. You are Done Cheadle!
Schedule your posts to make sure your Google+ posts always go out with an image. I don't know why but sometimes, the auto-sharing misses out the image if I publish immediately. But having your image in Google+ post for a Blogger blog post that was scheduled always works. So, I have taken to scheduling all my posts. Even if it goes out a few minutes later. Tee hee! :)

Bonus tip!
One of the best things about Google+ is that it allows you to cycle through all the images to post from your article by just clicking through on your phone. Plus (+), you can edit your posts any time you want!!

Hope this works for you. Comment below and let me know if you have any questions. And, of course, love is always welcome!

Ray out! Peace!
