TV Show Review: Chef's Table - A Netflix Original

I was cruising through Netflix last week looking for something to watch when I stumbled upon Chef’s Table.

It’s been on ‘my list’ for awhile but I never got around to watching it. Honestly, I chalked it up to yet another documentary on food or a pretentious glorified ad for a chef somewhere.
 This time though, I saw the number of Emmy’s it has been nominated for this year (4) and was suitably impressed. I decided to give it a go since I had a few hours and I was determined to #netflixandchill.



I kid you not, I got through 15 minutes of the first episode before pausing and screaming the house down for Habibi. I hadn’t watched something that excited me and - forgive me for lack of better words – stimulated me creatively to such an extent in a really long time. I wanted to shout about this great TV show from the rooftops so I did the next best thing and immediately texted the besties about it and then made the Habibi drop everything and watch it with me.
He watched for 10 minutes before it was declared ‘this is actually pretty good.’ Coming from a man who has consistently fallen asleep whenever I’ve wanted him to watch something, the mere fact that he stayed awake for more than 20 minutes is testament in itself.






Everything about the series is wonderfully exquisitely mind-glowingly fantastically superb. (i do not exaggerate) 
Direction, cinematography, at direction, music, editing… every single damn thing. Turns out it is a documentary. And it is about food. And the people cooking the food. But the comparison to all the other food shows and documentaries stops there.The director deserves every single accolade coming his way. His ability to transform the show into a work of art in itself was exquisite. I didn't know a good director could make a show about food have so many nuances. 

I don’t think my instantaneously insane love for this show will make much sense to someone who hasn’t watched it but I’m going to try to explain why it struck a chord with me.

Plain and simple, I was awestruck. And envious.
These chefs, these individuals, live everyday as an individual life, constantly growing and evolving themselves. Who they are at the start of the day is not who they are at the end of it. And because of that, their art is influenced and  also evolves and develops every day. Every single cook changes them and places them on a higher altitude of awareness. Constantly tweaking and editing, changing and creating, constantly working to listen to the voice in their head, to translating that voice and emotion into something tangible and physical hoping that with one bite of food, one sip of drink, one experience at their restaurants, we will understand that feeling and hear their voice. Sometimes without ever having talked to the chef themselves.





That is art my friends. 

The level at which these individuals live their lives, the level of dedication to their art is simply inspiring.  The ability to be consistently constant for all those years, facing adversities and bad review, teetering on the edge of despair but never quite giving up. The courage of their convictions to present to the world their views and opinions. The fact that they even had a voice that was clear and distinct enough to make loud enough of a noise. 


I love it so much that I will be reviewing my favorite episodes separately.
In the meantime, if you have Netflix, GO GO GO! Don’t wait for my reviews! I promise it’s worth it!
